Bran Castle is one of Romania's most iconic landmarks — a medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky hilltop where the Transylvanian plateau meets the Wallachian foothills. Marketed worldwide as 'Dracula's Castle', it offers visitors far more than gothic myth: centuries of real history, royal interiors, and stunning Carpathian scenery await.

The castle's silhouette against the surrounding mountains is striking in every season. Spring brings wildflowers to the slopes below, summer fills the courtyards with visitors from around the globe, autumn wraps the forests in fiery colours, and winter cloaks the whole scene in mist — making it look every bit the gothic fortress of legend. Inside, the rooms are filled with art and furniture collected by Queen Marie of Romania, who made Bran her favourite retreat and had it extensively renovated in the early 20th century.

Despite the Dracula branding, historians agree that Vlad the Impaler never lived here — and Bram Stoker, who gave the world Count Dracula in 1897, almost certainly never visited either. The castle was actually built by the Saxons of Kronstadt in 1377, and for centuries it served as a military stronghold and customs post on one of Transylvania's most important mountain passes.
