The Barcsay Museum in Szentendre is a small, intimate gallery devoted to the work of Jenő Barcsay, one of the leading figures of Hungarian constructivist painting. It makes a wonderful stop for anyone who has spent the day hiking around the Naszály hills or the Visegrád Highlands and wants to soak up the artistic soul of this charming Danube-side town.

The museum building itself is a small curiosity - it was formed by joining a Baroque house with a Classicist one, giving the interior a unique, slightly maze-like feel. Szentendre has a different mood in every season: lively and crowded with visitors in summer, quiet and contemplative in autumn and winter, when you can enjoy the artwork almost undisturbed.

How to get there

• Szentendre town center - short walk from the main square, about 5-10 minutes, easy
• Reachable from Budapest by suburban HÉV train or bus, then a walk through the old town

Practical information

• Since January 2016 the museum has been part of the Ferenczy Museum Center
• The permanent exhibition, known as the Barcsay Collection, is currently closed to visitors
• Highlights include fragments of the marble mosaic Women (1963), the Bartók Memorial glass mosaic, and tapestries from 1982-85

Jenő Barcsay was connected to Szentendre from 1929 onwards and left the town hundreds of paintings, which formed the core of this remarkable collection.
