Tucked into the main ridge of the Slovak Western Tatras at 1870 m, Skrajna Salatyńska Przełęcz is a surprisingly open and grassy saddle nestled between Brestová (1934 m) and Salatyński Wierch (2048 m). It is the kind of place that rewards ridge walkers with a real sense of space and solitude.

The pass area is notably flat for Tatra standards — a wide grassy bench cut by a tectonic trench, with steep stony eastern slopes dropping sharply into the Salatyńska Valley. To the west, views open onto the dwarf-pine-covered basin of Zadnie Kotliny, the uppermost level of the Liptov Bobrowiecki Valley. In summer the meadows are lush green; in autumn the dwarf pine glows golden. The eroded slopes below Salatyński Wierch are a reminder of how heavily these pastures were once grazed — for centuries the whole Salatyny area was used for sheep farming.

How to reach the viewpoint

• From Banikowska Pass — red trail along the main ridge, approx. 2 h 35 min, moderate to demanding.
• From Skrajna Salatyńska Przełęcz to Brestová — red trail, approx. 10 min up or 5 min down, easy.
• From Zwierówka mountain hut via Salatyński Wierch — blue trail then red trail, approx. 3 h 5 min up, 2 h 15 min down, demanding.

Practical information

• Best light for photography: early morning, when mist drifts through the Salatyńska Valley below.
• The slope on the Salatyński Wierch side is heavily eroded — stick to the marked trail to avoid further damage.

The pass sits right on the boundary between two very different valleys — the wild Salatyńska Valley to the east and the gentler Liptov Bobrowiecki Valley to the west, making it a true gateway between two worlds.
