Rohatka (2293 m) is one of the most significant mountain passes in the main ridge of the High Tatras — a narrow, deep notch between Malá Vysoká and Divá veža that hikers have been crossing for over 160 years. It is the most convenient crossing linking the Veľká Studená dolina valley on the east with the Bielovodská dolina valley on the west, and the scenery along the way is simply breathtaking.

The pass has a rugged, alpine character. Steep rock walls close in on both sides, and the notch itself is so tight it impresses even seasoned mountaineers. In spring and early summer, patches of snow linger in the shadiest corners; autumn brings fiery colours to the ridge; in winter the crossing becomes a serious undertaking, as ice can turn a moderately graded trail into a genuinely hazardous ascent. The area is built from distinctive mylonite rocks, giving the crags a striking streaked texture.

• Trail established in 1912, equipped with iron chains at the most exposed sections
• On dry rock the difficulty is manageable — in icy conditions the crossing is dangerous; crampons or microspikes recommended outside summer
• Best season: July to September

The first recorded tourist crossing dates back to 1864, when Karl Kalchbrenner and his companions, guided by local mountain guides, made their way through the pass — establishing what would become one of the classic High Tatras routes.
