Rysy is the highest point in Poland and one of the most iconic peaks in the entire Tatra Mountains — a summit that rewards every step with a breathtaking panorama stretching across Central Europe. If you are going to climb just one peak in the Tatras, make it this one.

The Rysy massif straddles the Polish-Slovak border, its three distinctive summits forming a silhouette instantly recognisable from the shores of Morskie Oko lake far below. On a clear day you can pick out 80 Tatra peaks, 13 mountain lakes and even the city of Kraków 90 km away. In summer the Polish trail buzzes with hikers — nearly 300 metres of fixed chains help navigate the exposed rocky sections, though snow patches can linger well into August. Autumn brings quieter trails, golden colours and crystal-clear visibility. Winter conditions demand full mountaineering experience and equipment.

• Morskie Oko mountain hut (1395 m a.s.l.) — red trail, approx. 3 h 50 min ascent, demanding — slopes up to 30°, nearly 300 m of fixed chains, approx. 1100 m elevation gain from the hut
• Popradské pleso hut (1500 m a.s.l., Slovakia) — blue then red trail, approx. 3 h 15 min ascent, moderate — technically easier than the Polish route, with metal steps on the steeper section

• The border summit (2499 m) is the highest point in Poland and part of the Crown of Europe — a summit register is kept here
• The Slovak trail is open only from 15 June to 31 October — outside this period the Polish route is the only access
• Free border crossing between Poland and Slovakia at the summit since 2007 (Schengen Area)
• Rysy counts towards the Crown of Polish Mountains, the Crown of Europe, and the Crown of the Tatras
• Chata pod Rysami mountain hut (approx. 2250 m, Slovak side) offers shelter and overnight accommodation

An endemic arachnid species, Polonozercon tatrensis, was first collected near the summit, and an astonishing 63 species of flowering plants have been recorded above 2483 m here — a remarkable piece of natural history clinging to one of the region's highest ridges.
