Žabie Javorové pleso is one of the most secluded mountain lakes in the High Tatras — wild, atmospheric and steeped in legend. Sitting at 1,878 m above sea level deep in the Javorová Valley, it offers a raw and unforgettable alpine experience far from the tourist crowds.
The lake covers 1.1 ha, stretches 197 m in length and reaches a maximum depth of 15.2 m. To the south, the towering walls of Javorový štít rise as part of the main High Tatras ridge, while Suchý hrebeň (Dry Ridge) frames the scene from the north. The setting is dramatic in every season — brooding and moody under autumn mist, brilliantly sharp under a clear summer sky. In 1940 a massive rock avalanche fell from Javorový štít and partially buried the lake, giving it its distinctive irregular outline that you can still see today.
How to get thereThe lake's name traces back to 18th-century gold prospectors who believed that giant toads guarded hidden treasures here — a legend that still gives this lonely corner of the Tatras an air of mystery.
