Wyżni Zbójnicki Staw is the highest and largest of the Zbójnicki Lakes in the Slovak High Tatras, sitting at nearly 1972 m above sea level. If you are looking for a rewarding mountain lake with a wild, unspoiled atmosphere, this is a place you will not forget.
The lake rests in the south-western part of the Zbójnická Rovina plateau, at the foot of the Świstowy Ridge descending from Świstowy Peak, which separates the Staroleśna Valley from the Kotlina pod Rohatkou and Divoká Kotlina basins. With a surface area of about 0.642 ha, dimensions of 115 × 95 m and a depth of up to 8 m, it is impressively sized for a Tatra mountain lake. In summer the water shimmers in vivid alpine colours, while in autumn the surrounding slopes glow golden. Spring brings a slow awakening as snow retreats from the high meadows around the shore.
How to get thereThe name 'Zbójnicki' refers to the tradition of Tatra outlaws and brigands, though no specific legend ties these particular waters to any notorious characters — adding a delightful sense of mystery to an already captivating spot.
