Velické pleso is one of the most rewarding mountain lakes in the Slovak High Tatras — a glacial tarn nestled in the Velická Valley at 1663 metres above sea level, surrounded by dramatic ridges and fed by a spectacular waterfall. Whether you are looking for a half-day hike or a multi-day base camp, this lake delivers an unforgettable alpine experience.

Stretching roughly 350 by 90 metres and covering over 2 hectares, the lake is the largest in the Velická Valley. Its floor has been smoothed by centuries of erosion, keeping depths at a modest 4.5 metres. Looking north from the shoreline you will spot Velická vodopád — a beautiful waterfall where the Velický potok plunges down a high rocky step. In summer the meadows around the lake are lush and green; in autumn the hillsides turn golden and rust-red, reflecting perfectly in the calm water. The mountain hotel Sliezsky dom stands on the south-western shore, making the lake an ideal overnight stop on longer routes through the Tatras.

On 3 June 1995, Pope John Paul II stopped here to pray at a specially built lakeside pavilion during his pilgrimage to Slovakia — a historical moment that has given this already beautiful spot an extra layer of meaning for many visitors.
