Studenec is a small but ecologically remarkable nature reserve tucked into the Ore Mountains, where a slowly overgrowing pond and boggy meadow form one of the region's most valuable wetland ecosystems. It's a rewarding stop for anyone curious about rare bog plants and quiet, untouched nature.

The reserve sits in a shallow, peaty valley along the Studenecký stream, framed by pine and birch woodland and edged with damp thistle meadows. In summer the marsh comes alive with tens of thousands of bog arum plants and bogbean, while in autumn the peatland turns rich shades of gold and rust. The ground can be soft and wet underfoot, so it pays to tread carefully, but the reward is a genuinely wild wetland atmosphere rarely found so easily accessible.

How to get there

• From Oloví — approx. 2.5 km west, easy to moderate walk, about 40-50 minutes on foot
• Can be combined with a route continuing to the V rašelinách reserve, located upstream at a higher elevation

Practical information

• Protected since 1989 — picking plants or disturbing habitats is prohibited
• Home to strongly endangered species including bog arum, bog cranberry and marsh helleborine relatives
• Terrain is wet and boggy — sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended, especially after rain

Studenec is one of the few places in the Ore Mountains where tens of thousands of bog arum plants can be seen thriving in a natural peatland — a sight that's rare even by Czech national standards.
