This unusual site blends history with nature - the western wing of the castle in Bělá pod Bezdězem hides a summer colony of greater mouse-eared bats, a critically endangered species in the Czech Republic. The nature monument was established specifically to protect these animals nesting in the attic spaces of the castle wing.

The castle itself stands on a rocky spur in a part of town known for its abundant greenery, making it a pleasant spot for a walk in any season. In summer, evenings are the best time to visit, when the bats fly out to feed - a genuine natural spectacle. The protected area covers the castle buildings, courtyard, and adjoining lawns and gardens, with a total size of just 1.15 hectares, so a visit does not take long.
