Nižné studené pleso is the lowest of three small, secretive lakes nestled at the southern foot of Strelecká veža on the Strelecká plateau in the Veľká Studená dolina valley. For a long time these lakes were completely unknown and unnamed — hidden gems that even seasoned hikers would walk past without knowing they existed. That sense of discovery is exactly what makes visiting them so rewarding.
Sitting at an elevation of 1,812 m above sea level and reaching only 0.8 m in depth, this tiny lake punches well above its weight in terms of atmosphere. The rugged High Tatra scenery that frames it — rocky walls, alpine meadows and the twin companion lakes Prostredné and Vyšné studené pleso nearby — creates a landscape that feels genuinely off the beaten path. The lake drains via the Studený potôčik stream, which flows down into the Veľký Studený potok. Autumn brings warm amber tones to the surrounding vegetation, while summer offers crisp silence far from the busy tourist trails below.
How to get thereFor years these three lakes were so little known that they had no official names at all — it was Polish hikers who first gave them the collective name Niespodziane Stawki, meaning 'Unexpected Ponds', a name that perfectly captures the surprise of stumbling upon them for the first time.
