Granackie Oko is one of those secret gems of the High Tatras that only the most determined mountain explorers ever get to see. This tiny tarn, tucked into the upper reaches of Sławkowa Valley on the Slovak side of the High Tatras, rewards those who venture off the beaten track with a breathtaking sense of wild solitude.

The tarn sits just to the west of Granacki Staw — the largest lake in Sławkowa Valley — and when water levels are high, the two bodies of water actually merge into one. Granackie Oko lies among rocky debris at the foot of the Mała and Wielka Granacka Turnia crags. The atmosphere here is raw and elemental: silence broken only by wind, sheer granite walls rising above and the still water reflecting the sky. In autumn the surrounding peaks glow with golden hues, while in late spring snowfields still linger in the hollows around the tarn.
