Velická Valley is one of the most rewarding destinations in the Slovak High Tatras — compact yet full of drama, with cascading waterfalls, terraced glacial basins, crystal-clear mountain lakes and the towering walls of the Gerlach massif looming above. It is the kind of place that wins you over before you even reach the first lake.

The valley opens towards the south-east, its lower section cutting through a thick glacial moraine left behind by a glacier that once extended well beyond the Tatra range. Higher up, the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular: the first rocky step, known as 'Mokrá Wanta', is adorned by the Velický vodopád waterfall, and the terraces above hide charming sub-valleys — Kvetnica, Horná Kvetnica and Velická kotlina. The main draw for most hikers is Velické pleso, a beautiful lake sitting at 1665 m above sea level. In winter the valley transforms into an ice-climbing paradise, with several impressive frozen waterfalls attracting climbers from across Europe.

The valley takes its name from the Spis town of Vel'ká, and its tourism history stretches back to the mid-19th century — the first winter visitor arrived as early as 1873, starting a tradition of year-round exploration that continues to this day.
