Čierna dolina is one of those rare valleys that belongs entirely to nature. Tucked away in the Belianske Tatry mountains, just north of Tatranská Kotlina, this roughly 1.25 km long valley offers a glimpse into untouched wilderness that few visitors ever get to experience. Its very inaccessibility is what makes it so special.

The valley opens at the Karolína meadow (770 m above sea level), where a gamekeeper's lodge still stands, and heads westward before curving gently to the northwest. It comes to an end beneath the peak of Malá Margita. To the west it is framed by the Dlhý vrch ridge, while the Čierny vrch ridge guards its southwestern flank. The Čierny potok stream runs through the valley floor, and Suchá dolina lies just to the south. The landscape is raw and atmospheric — dense forest, rocky slopes and deep silence make this feel like a hidden corner of the world. In autumn the valley glows with gold and amber; in winter it disappears under a thick blanket of snow.

How to get there

• Tatranská Kotlina — starting point for reaching the Karolína meadow, where the valley begins. Note: no marked hiking trails lead into the valley itself.

Practical information

• Čierna dolina is a strict nature reserve of TANAP — entry without a special permit is prohibited.
• There are no marked tourist trails inside the valley.

As one of TANAP's strictly protected reserves, Čierna dolina is a reminder of how wild the Belianske Tatry once were — and still are, in their most secret corners.
