Batizovské pleso is one of the most awe-inspiring mountain lakes in the entire High Tatras. Sitting at 1,884 m above sea level, it lies at the foot of Gerlachovský štít — the highest peak in the Tatras — surrounded by sheer rock walls that will leave even seasoned hikers breathless. If you want to experience the raw power of the Slovak mountains, this is the place.

The lake has a distinctive crescent shape, covers nearly 3.5 hectares, and is sealed by a dramatic 11-metre rock bar that acts as a natural dam. Standing on that bar, you are treated to views of the fierce pillars of Končistá, the walls of Gerlach, Batizovský štít, Kościółek, Kaczy Szczyt and Zmarzły Szczyt — a full panorama of High Tatra grandeur. This is a glacial lake, carved out over thousands of years, and its waters stay cold and crystal clear even in midsummer. From the lake flows the Batizovský potok stream, which tumbles off the rock ledge in a series of beautiful cascades known as Batizovské vodopády. Spring snowmelt turns those falls into a roaring spectacle, while autumn brings golden calm and near-perfect solitude.

• The yellow trail from Vyšné Hágy is open only from 16 June to 31 October.
• The red trail (Tatranská magistrála) is accessible during snow-free periods only.
• The lake lies within TANAP national park — observe all park regulations during your visit.

Look out for a small memorial plaque fixed to a boulder beside the lake, dedicated to Dr Ernst Gottlieb, who lost his life on nearby Končistá — a quiet reminder that these mountains demand respect.
