The Jochköpfl rises to 3,143 metres right on the border between Austria and Italy, in the Windach-Brunnenkogel ridge of the Stubai Alps. It's a peak for climbers who want a real ridge scramble with the bonus of standing on two countries at once.

Glaciers cling to the mountain's western and northern flanks - the gentle Kitzkampferner to the north and the rapidly shrinking Rötenkarferner to the west, a stark reminder of climate change at altitude. From the summit, neighbouring peaks like Schraakogel, Vorderer Kitzkogel and Timmelsjochberg come into view along the ridge system. The prominent southern ridge, over a kilometre long, offers an exposed but rewarding scramble for those with a head for heights.

• Timmelsjoch pass road - hike east along the Wietenbach stream up to the tarn in the Oberes Wietenbachkar, then follow the south ridge with moderate scrambling (UIAA II) to the top - about 3 hours, moderate to demanding difficulty
• Southwest ridge - a harder climbing route (UIAA III), medium difficulty
• Via the Rötenkarferner glacier - a combined high-altitude tour with a UIAA II section, requiring glacier equipment and experience

• The summit sits almost exactly on the Austrian-Italian border, with the actual border line about 150 m east of the survey point
• The inn at the Timmelsjoch pass makes a convenient base
• The glacier route demands proper equipment and mountaineering experience

The first ascent is believed to have been made by chamois hunters and surveyors' assistants in the 1850s, while renowned alpinist Ludwig Purtscheller traversed the entire ridge on 22 August 1890.
