Hochgern (1748 m) is one of the most distinctive peaks of the Chiemgau Alps, rising solitary south of Lake Chiemsee. With a prominence of 967 meters, it stands out as an independent, imposing summit visible from far across Bavaria.

From the top on a clear day, hikers can spot the Berchtesgaden Alps and Loferer Steinberge to the southeast, the Central Alps with Grossglockner and Grossvenediger to the south, plus the Kaisergebirge and Mangfallgebirge to the west. In summer, grassy slopes and sweeping panoramas draw hikers and mountain bikers alike, while in winter the steeper upper sections can carry avalanche risk. There is no cable car to the summit - it can only be reached on foot.

• Marquartstein - the main route, via Agergschwendalm and the year-round Hochgernhaus (1459 m), roughly 3.5 hours total, easy
• Unterwössen-Au - a shorter and slightly steeper alternative, popular in winter too, about 3-3.5 hours
• Staudach-Egerndach - a northern approach via Staudacheralm, narrow and partly rocky, slippery path requiring good footing, about 3 hours
• Bergen - a scenic, quieter eastern route via Eschelmoos and Bischofsfellnalm, about 3 hours

• Hochgernhaus (1459 m) offers overnight stays and meals all year round
• The final 100 meters of ascent require a good head for heights
• The Hochgernlauf mountain race has taken place here every May since 1999

West of the main summit, the Hochlerch offers a superb view over Lake Chiemsee and the Kampenwand massif - well worth the short detour after reaching the top.
