Strečno Castle is one of Slovakia's most dramatic fortresses, perched on a 103-metre-high rock above the gorge of the Váh River. Largely reconstructed and very much alive, it offers a stunning combination of medieval atmosphere, sweeping valley views and fascinating history that makes it well worth the short walk from the car park.

The castle commands a narrow mountain gateway where the Váh squeezes between steep rocky slopes — a strategic position that shaped centuries of history. In summer the ruins are framed by lush greenery; in autumn mist drifts over the river, giving the whole scene an almost cinematic atmosphere. From the top of the main tower, after climbing 70 steps, you are rewarded with a wide panorama over the Váh Valley and the surrounding peaks.

Žofia Bosniakova, wife of Hungarian palatine Francis Wesselényi, was so revered for her piety that when her body was found unchanged 45 years after her death, she became a local legend — and her story still echoes through the castle walls today.
