Polom (1,010 m a.s.l.) is a summit that stands out from the skyline of the Lúčanská Malá Fatra range for a rather unusual reason — a vast limestone quarry has carved deeply into its slopes, making it instantly recognisable from the city of Žilina, just 8 km to the northwest. This is a peak with a distinct character: industrial yet historically layered, and surprisingly rewarding for the views it offers.

The western and northern flanks bear the clear marks of decades of quarrying — bare rock faces, sparse vegetation and an active operation that transports extracted limestone by conveyor belt across the Váh river to a lime works in Varín. The eastern and southern parts of the massif retain a more natural feel, covered in mixed forest. From spots near the quarry's edge, the views open up beautifully to the north and west: the Žilina Basin, the Krivánska Fatra, Súľov Rocks, Javorníky hills, and on clear days even the peaks of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids — Kněhyně, Smrk and Lysá hora.

• Forest road from Stráňavy — suitable for mountain biking

• The Polom mountain hut is located at the western foot of the peak, right on the hiking trail.
• A museum with a permanent exhibition about the 'Malá Fatra Operation' — fierce WWII battles fought in this area — is located at the foot of the mountain above Stráňavy.
• The annual 'Šprint Polom' cycling race starts in Stráňavy and finishes at Javorina saddle — 6.9 km with 521 m of elevation gain.

A monument to the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps, which fought here in April 1945, once stood on the summit — it was relocated in 1986 to the neighbouring Javorina due to the expanding quarry.
