Spiš Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, its dramatic ruins spreading across nearly 4 hectares atop a travertine hill at 634 metres above sea level. The castle sits on a rocky hill with near-vertical walls rising 20 to 40 metres above the surrounding plain, giving it a naturally fortress-like character even without any man-made defences. From the ramparts, you get sweeping views across the Spiš region — rolling farmland, the towers of Spišské Podhradie below, and distant mountain ridges on the horizon. The atmosphere shifts beautifully with the seasons: lush and green in summer, golden and dramatic in autumn, and almost mystical under a blanket of winter snow.
