Perched on a rocky cliff above the Branná river at around 630 metres above sea level, Kolštejn is one of those rare places where a medieval fortress and a Renaissance manor house have merged into a single, atmospheric ruin. If you love history wrapped in mountain scenery, this hidden gem in the Jeseníky foothills is well worth the detour.

The complex sits on the south-eastern edge of the village of Branná, commanding views over the river valley and the surrounding forested hills. The thick castle walls follow the very edge of the cliff, and the remains of a cylindrical tower — once converted into a viewing platform in the 19th century — still punctuate the skyline. The atmosphere shifts beautifully with the seasons: lush and green in spring and summer, dramatically golden in autumn, and quietly haunting under a dusting of winter snow.
