The Székely National Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe is the oldest museum in the Székely Land, founded back in 1875. It's a treasure trove of Transylvanian history and culture, housing everything from medieval manuscripts to unique natural history collections that tell the story of this fascinating borderland region.

The museum's striking main building, designed by renowned architect Kós Károly and built in 1911-1912, is a landmark in itself — a beautiful example of Transylvanian architecture later expanded with a new wing. Walking through its halls feels like a journey through time, moving between an old library, a natural history cabinet, and an open-air ethnographic exhibition. Each season brings something different to explore, from permanent archaeological displays to the outdoor exhibit featuring an authentic 1767 Székely house.

• The natural history department holds one of the most complete Pliocene and Quaternary mammal fossil collections in East-Central Europe

Interestingly, the museum's most valuable collections survived two world wars, though not unscathed — some unique manuscripts and rare books were destroyed in a 1945 bombing raid. This is a place where the history of the Székely people truly comes alive.
