Milešov Chateau perches dramatically on a rocky hill, its silhouette rising just south of Milešovka, the tallest peak of the Czech Central Uplands. This is a place where a 14th-century castle evolved through Renaissance and Baroque transformations into the striking chateau you see today, wrapped in the story of the noble Kaplíř family of Sulevice.

The setting on a rocky outcrop above the village of Milešov near Velemín gives the chateau a commanding, almost fortress-like atmosphere, softened by the surrounding park. Autumn mist rolling through the valleys and spring greenery in the gardens make this a rewarding stop any time of year. With Milešovka looming to the north, the area naturally invites combining a chateau visit with a proper hike up the region's highest summit.

• Velemín - short approach via local road, approx. 15-20 minutes, easy difficulty
• Easily combined with a hike up nearby Milešovka to the north

Practical information

• The chateau consists of the Old Chateau (single-wing, two-storey building) and the New Chateau (four-wing building with arcades)
• The park contains a unique Baroque garden pavilion (known as casino), built 1701-1708, with frescoes depicting classical mythology
• As of the end of 2023, the chateau no longer operates as a care home and is being offered for sale by the Ústí nad Labem Region
• The pavilion is in poor structural condition, though its roof was fully restored in 2016 with fir shingles

A curious detail: the pavilion's roof truss has a completely unique construction, with the only known comparable example found in France.
