Bořeň is one of the most striking rocky summits in the Bohemian Central Highlands — a dramatic phonolite crag that towers over the valley of the Bílina River with near-vertical walls rising up to 100 metres. It dominates the skyline of the town of Bílina and rewards every visitor with a full 360-degree panorama from its 539-metre top.

The character of Bořeň changes beautifully with the seasons. Spring brings rare protected wildflowers to the rocky slopes — pasque flowers, primroses and the poisonous daphne. Summer is ideal for wide open views across the Bohemian Central Highlands. Autumn wraps the lower forested flanks in warm colours, while winter strips the landscape back to reveal the raw, columnar basalt architecture in all its severity. The summit area feels almost otherworldly, scattered with rock needles, towers and crevice caves carved by centuries of frost weathering.

• Bořeň is one of the most important non-sandstone climbing destinations in the Czech Republic, with around 400 routes of all grades, including long multi-pitch climbs on the north face.

Remarkably, Bořeň is often compared to Devils Tower in Wyoming, USA — not just because the two share the same rock composition, but because the surrounding landscape feels strikingly similar. A small Czech wonder that punches well above its weight.
