Rehefeld Hunting Lodge is a picturesque building tucked at the edge of the forest, high above the right bank of the Wild Weißeritz river in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge). Its story reads like a novel - a wedding gift from Saxon Crown Princess Carola to her husband, later King Albert, and later a luxury hunting hotel that hosted European aristocracy and 1930s elite.

The surroundings are lovely in every season - in summer, the green valley slopes and shade of the old forest create a peaceful backdrop for walks, while in winter the area turns into a snowy landscape reminiscent of the era when nearby Altenberg hosted German ski championships. The building, with its distinctive tower and pointed pyramid roof, is striking even from a distance, and the view over the valley from the lodge is one of the most charming in the region.

How to get there

• Rehefeld-Zaunhaus (Altenberg) — forest trail, approx. 20-30 minutes, easy difficulty
• Local road access close to the lodge, followed by a short walk

Practical information

• Privately owned property, currently not open for interior visits — can be admired from outside
• A small castle chapel from 1879 stands nearby
• Good starting point for walks in the Altenberg area

Fun fact: in the 1930s, guests here included celebrities such as Lída Baarová and Princess Ileana of Romania, and during World War II the lodge briefly served as a military hospital.
