Hidden among the quiet forests of the Pilis hills lie the romantic ruins of a medieval Cistercian abbey, a place where history and legend intertwine. Here, near present-day Pilisszentkereszt, Queen Gertrude of Merania, mother of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, was once laid to rest.

The ruins sit in a scenic valley surrounded by the gentle slopes of the Pilis Mountains, making it a popular destination for walks that combine history with nature. In summer, the shaded forest paths offer welcome coolness, in autumn the surroundings glow with colorful foliage, and in winter the bare stone foundations create an even more mysterious atmosphere. Practical information

• Abbey founded by King Béla III in 1184, modeled on the monastery of Acey in France
• Burial site of Queen Gertrude, assassinated in the Pilis forest in 1213
• Destroyed by the Tatars in 1242 and finally razed by the Ottomans in 1526
• Only foundations and fragments of stone decoration remain today

Legend has it that Queen Gertrude's tombstone was commissioned by her daughter, St. Elizabeth, who visited her mother's grave during her trip to Hungary in 1222 — today the site still draws visitors seeking traces of Hungary's forgotten history.
