Not every waterfall requires a strenuous hike — and Chernykivsky Waterfall in the Ukrainian Carpathians is proof of that. Tucked right alongside the main road through the village of Chernyk, this two-tiered cascade tumbles over ancient flysch rock and rewards visitors with an instant splash of wild mountain scenery.

The waterfall drops a total of 7 to 8 metres in two distinct stages. The upper cascade is wide and fan-like, with water sliding down roughly 2.5 metres across the rock face. Then the stream is funnelled into a narrow, wedge-shaped channel before plunging in a single powerful jet a further 4 to 5 metres. Spring is the most dramatic time to visit, when snowmelt pushes the Chernyk stream to its fullest flow. Summer brings a quieter trickle but a lush green canopy that keeps the air around the waterfall refreshingly cool. The waterfall sits within the Gorgany mountain massif — one of the wildest and least-visited ranges of the Ukrainian Carpathians — so the surrounding landscape feels genuinely remote even if the waterfall itself is easy to reach.
