The Prejmer Fortified Church is one of Transylvania's most extraordinary medieval sites — a massive circular fortress built around a Gothic church that sheltered local villagers through centuries of invasion. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can literally walk the battlements and step inside the tiny refuge rooms that once saved hundreds of lives.

The sheer scale of the defences hits you the moment you arrive: walls up to 5 metres thick and nearly 12 metres tall form an almost perfect ring around the church, with four levels of over 270 rooms tucked along the inner face. The atmosphere shifts beautifully with the seasons — cool and shadowy in summer, warmly golden in autumn, and hauntingly quiet under winter snow.

• Prejmer village is approximately 18 km northeast of Brașov — easily reachable by car or by bus from Brașov city centre. The fortified church stands in the heart of the village, just a short walk from the main square.

• The site operates as an open museum — allow time to explore the wall rooms, walk the connecting corridors, and climb to the outer battlements.
• Entry to the complex passes through a 30-metre tunnel guarded by a portcullis with iron-reinforced oak doors.
• Inside you can see the 'organ of death', a medieval rotating weapon fitted with multiple gun barrels used to defend the gate.
• The church houses the oldest triptych altarpiece in the region, dating to around 1450, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.
• The church follows a rare Greek cross floor plan — the only one of its kind in Transylvania.

Prejmer village was destroyed more than 50 times between the 13th and 17th centuries as it stood directly in the path of invaders coming through the Buzău Pass — yet the fortress itself was only rarely captured, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders.
