Biely Kameň is a hauntingly beautiful ruined Gothic castle hidden in the forested hills above the small town of Svätý Jur, just a short drive from Bratislava. If you love history wrapped in nature, this is the kind of place that rewards a quiet afternoon wander.

The castle sits on a wooded hilltop, and the walk up through the trees already sets the right mood. The ruins are heavily weathered, but you can still make out the roughly rectangular layout of the upper ward, the remains of the eastern wing with fragments of Gothic brick vaulting, and a spacious vaulted cellar on the northern side. The atmosphere shifts beautifully with the seasons — lush and green in summer, misty and atmospheric in autumn, peacefully silent in winter. Views of the surrounding landscape peek through the trees, adding to the charm.

How to get there:

• From the centre of Svätý Jur — follow the marked trail, then turn left onto the tourist trail leading up to the ruins; difficulty: easy to moderate.

According to a 1412 property inventory, the castle once had two towers, a great hall, a chapel, and a bakery — quite the medieval complex for what are now mossy fragments in the forest.
