trails, peaks and attractions
Liptov is the kind of region that stops you in your tracks — a broad valley basin encircled on all sides by towering mountain ranges, where the High Tatras, Western Tatras, Veľká Fatra and Low Tatras form a breathtaking natural amphitheatre. It is a dream destination for hikers who want variety: high-altitude trails, peaceful river valleys, and genuine Slovak mountain culture all within easy reach.
The Liptov Basin, carved through by the Váh river, is anything but flat — rolling hills, deep side valleys and forested slopes give the landscape a dynamic, ever-changing feel. The vast Liptovská Mara reservoir now dominates the heart of the basin, offering a striking contrast of shimmering water against snow-capped peaks. Almost everywhere you stand, a mountain horizon frames the view.
Highlights:Beneath the surface of the Liptovská Mara reservoir lies the submerged town of Liptovská Mara, flooded in the 1970s to create the dam — on low-water days, the outlines of old walls and foundations are said to reappear like ghosts from the past.
