The Tailors' Bastion in Cluj-Napoca is one of the best-preserved medieval fortification towers in all of Transylvania — a remarkable piece of living history that has survived the centuries almost completely intact. It is the only fully preserved bastion from the old medieval fortress of Cluj, and its thick, chiselled stone walls still bear the original arrow slits and firing positions. Step up close and you can almost hear the echoes of the city's dramatic past.

The bastion occupies the south-eastern corner of what was once the medieval city, and it impresses even from a distance — a sturdy, rounded tower of rough-cut stone rising confidently above the surrounding streets. To the north, a surviving stretch of crenellated wall with a wall-walk gives a vivid sense of what the full fortification once looked like. The atmosphere here is wonderfully layered: in summer the warm stone glows in the afternoon light and the surrounding park fills with locals and visitors alike, while in autumn the golden foliage frames the grey tower beautifully.

A dark piece of history: in 1601, following the Battle of Mirăslău, the body of Baba Novac — a general of Michael the Brave — was publicly impaled near this very bastion. A commemorative statue by sculptor Virgil Fulicea was erected nearby in 1975.
