Pietrosul Călimanilor (2,100 m) is the highest volcanic peak in the Călimani Mountains of Romania — a massive yet surprisingly approachable summit that rewards hikers with a truly unique landscape shaped by ancient volcanic forces. The Călimani range has a raw, otherworldly character. The trails wind through strangely beautiful volcanic formations, passing landmarks known locally as the 'Twelve Apostles' and the 'Red Rocks' before reaching the summit. In summer the routes are pleasant and well within reach of most hikers; in winter the same paths become considerably more challenging and demand proper preparation.
