Žermanická přehrada is a beautiful reservoir on the Lučina river near the village of Žermanice, and one of the most beloved recreational retreats in the Ostrava region. With 248 hectares of open water framed by rolling forested hills, it offers a refreshing escape from city life at almost any time of year.

The reservoir has a wonderfully versatile character. In summer it buzzes with swimmers, sailors, kayakers and anglers, while the surrounding shores fill with campers enjoying the warm Central European evenings. Come spring and autumn the pace slows right down — morning mist drifts across the calm surface, the wooded hillsides turn amber and gold, and the waterside walking paths feel almost entirely your own. The maximum depth reaches 28 m, giving the lake a rich, deep blue hue on sunny days that makes it feel far more dramatic than a man-made structure might suggest.

• Fishing is permitted with a valid fishing licence; species include pike, pike-perch, carp, eel, tench, trout and more

When the dam was built between 1951 and 1958, the two villages of Horní and Dolní Soběšovice were flooded — on very still, clear days locals say you can almost sense their presence beneath the surface.
