Żelazna Kotlina — or 'Iron Cirque' — is one of the most remote and wild corners of the Slovak High Tatras, forming the uppermost level of the Dolina Złomisk valley. Hidden from the casual hiker, it rewards those with the skill and determination to reach it with an atmosphere of raw, untouched mountain wilderness.
Sitting at roughly 2075 m above sea level, the cirque is enclosed on all sides by dramatic ridges: the main Tatra ridge between Západný Železný štít and Ľadový štít to the north, the Končistá ridge to the east, and a short spur towards Kozia Strážnica to the west. The terrain is rocky and uncompromising, the silence almost absolute. In spring, snow lingers long in the shadows; in summer, hardy alpine plants push through the boulders; in autumn, the surrounding peaks take on deep, brooding hues. This is a place that feels genuinely far from the modern world.
How to get thereŻelazna Kotlina is the easternmost branch of the Dolina Złomisk valley and also serves as a base for climbing the south-western face of Východný Železný štít — one of the more challenging ascents in this part of the Tatras.
