Waginger See is the warmest lake in Upper Bavaria, with summer water temperatures reaching up to 27°C - a real draw for swimmers, sailors and anyone looking to relax by the water. Nestled among the gentle hills, fields and meadows of the Rupertiwinkel region, it forms a shared unincorporated area together with the neighboring Tachinger See.

The landscape here is calm and rolling, perfect for easy walks, cycling or simply enjoying the view. The lake connects to Tachinger See through a narrow strait near Tettenhausen, spanned by a bridge carrying the district road TS 26. In harsh winters the lake still freezes over, though a full freeze across its entire width is rarer today than it was up until the 1960s. In summer, the shallow, reed-lined bays fill with water lily fields, and tench can often be spotted feeding at dawn and dusk.

How to get there

• Waging am See - town on the western and northeastern shore, easy walking or cycling access around the lake
• Tettenhausen - located at the narrow strait between Waginger See and Tachinger See, reached via the bridge on road TS 26

Practical information

• The lake is owned by the state of Bavaria and managed by the Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen
• The inflowing streams carry little cold, oxygen-rich water, so trout and char are rarely found here despite the lake's warmth

A fun fact: a local professional fisherman once supplied carp for New Year's Eve to Pope John Paul II himself.
