Vrbické pleso is the largest natural lake in the Low Tatras and one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. Nestled among spruce forests at 1,113 m above sea level, this glacial lake offers a wonderful sense of calm and wilderness — a perfect reward after a mountain hike.

The lake was formed thousands of years ago when the retreating glacier from the northern slopes of Chopok left behind a terminal moraine that dammed the valley and created this beautiful body of water. It covers just 0.69 ha, but the atmosphere here is truly unique. The shores are partly fringed with aquatic vegetation and marshy in places, giving the lake an authentic, almost fairy-tale feel. The surrounding spruce forest provides natural shelter — cool shade in summer, golden hues in autumn, and a picture-perfect frozen surface in winter. At the southern end of the lake stands the mountain hotel 'Mikulášska chata', making this area accessible year-round.

• The lake is a protected national natural monument (národná prírodná pamiatka) with a level 4 protection status — please stick to marked paths around the shore.
• A walking circuit follows the lakeshore; the blue trail along the western bank continues to Chopok, while the yellow trail leads to Sedlo Poľany.

Fun fact: the water level in the lake used to fluctuate significantly on its own. To keep it stable, a purpose-built sluice gate was installed at the outlet — so today the lake always looks perfectly full, no matter the season.
