The Žilina Water Reservoir is a fantastic outdoor playground stretching 7.5 km along the Váh River just outside Žilina — a place where a striking hydroelectric dam meets a vibrant recreational zone loved by locals and visitors alike. Whether you arrive on a bike, in running shoes or with a kayak paddle in hand, this spot has something for everyone.

The reservoir sits in a wide valley framed by gentle wooded hills, and the calm surface of the water creates a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the buzz of the city nearby. In summer the paths are alive with cyclists, inline skaters and joggers, while anglers line the banks and kayakers glide across the water. Autumn brings a quieter magic, with mist rolling over the reservoir in the early mornings and the surrounding slopes turning golden.

The reservoir was completed in 1997–1998, and its construction required the flooding of several small settlements including Hruštiny. Today, only a small roadside chapel remains as a quiet reminder of the community that once lived here.
