Tucked away in the misty peatbogs of the Jeseníky Mountains, Velké mechové jezírko is a hauntingly beautiful bog lake that feels like a world apart. Sitting at 769 metres above sea level within the Rejvíz National Nature Reserve, this compact but deeply atmospheric lake rewards every visitor with a sense of true wilderness.

The lake measures just 68.5 metres long and 41 metres wide, but its character is enormous. Cotton grass and sphagnum moss carpet the surroundings, while bog pine trees stand like silent sentinels along the water's edge. In spring and summer the landscape glows with life; in autumn the bog turns to deep amber and rust. The water is remarkably still and dark, and on sunny days it mirrors the sky perfectly. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will appreciate the rare species found here — from round-leaved sundew to alpine newts.

• Rejvíz village (parking available) — follow the blue tourist trail towards Dětřichov, after approx. 2 km turn off onto the wooden boardwalk leading to the lake — approx. 30–40 minutes walk, difficulty: easy

• Look out for protected species: round-leaved sundew, cranberry, bog rosemary, bog fritillary butterfly, and alpine newt

Local legend claims that the sunken city of Hunohrad lies beneath the lake's surface — its sinful inhabitants swallowed by the bog as punishment — and that a mysterious shepherd named Gill guards a treasure hidden in the depths. Remarkably, a genuine Hun burial pot was discovered nearby, lending just enough truth to keep the legend alive.
