Krčić Waterfall is a striking 22-metre-high cascade located just north of Knin, Croatia, where the Krčić River plunges down to meet the Krka. Also known as Veliki buk or Topoljski buk, it's a lesser-known gem for those exploring the Knin countryside.
The setting is dramatic, with the water tumbling over a tufa barrier surrounded by rugged limestone terrain typical of the Dinara mountain foothills. While the falls once flowed constantly, engineering works over the past century - including tunnelling, damming and the construction of a hydroelectric plant - have turned it into an intermittent waterfall that now flows mainly after heavy rain or snowmelt, right above the source of the Krka River.
How to get there
Practical information
Local legend tells of an old fortress on the hill beside the falls that once guarded a bridge - and says the bridge will be rebuilt only when the Krčić never runs dry again and people stop waging war on one another.
