Vaganski vrh is the highest peak of the Velebit mountain range and the tallest summit in mainland Croatia, rising 1,758 m above the Adriatic Sea. It's a rewarding goal for hikers who want a genuine mountain challenge combined with sweeping sea views.

The summit lies within Paklenica National Park, and the approach through the dramatic Velika Paklenica canyon sets the tone for the whole hike — steep limestone walls, forested slopes lower down, and increasingly barren, rocky terrain as you climb higher. From the ridge near the top, the Adriatic and its islands unfold below. Summers can be hot and dry, while spring and autumn offer a quieter, more comfortable experience; winter ascents require proper mountaineering experience and gear.

How to reach the summit

• Starigrad (via Velika Paklenica canyon) — past Paklenica mountain hut (480 m), then via the marked Lipa staza trail — steep and demanding, slippery when wet in the wooded sections, with a narrow, steep scree field above the tree line before reaching the summit ridge
• Alternative: Bukova staza trail, branching north about 300 m before Paklenica hut — longer and less steep, but crosses karst terrain with sharp rock

Practical information

• Access to the summit requires paying the Paklenica National Park admission fee
• The walk from Starigrad can be shortened by about 2 km by using the parking area inside the national park, for an additional fee
• Paklenica mountain hut, at the upper end of the canyon, makes a good rest stop before the steep final ascent
