Schwarzsee is a small bog lake in the Kitzbühel Alps, known as the warmest bog lake in Tyrol. It's a perfect spot if you're after a relaxed swim surrounded by mountains, away from the crowds of the bigger alpine lakes.

The lake sits at 762 m above sea level, covering an area of 0.16 km² with a maximum depth of 7 m. It's framed by a calm, gently marshy landscape typical of bogland, and its shoreline stretches for about two kilometers, making for a pleasant walk all the way around. In summer the water warms up nicely, drawing swimmers and sunbathers, and the lake has even hosted Triathlon World Cup races in the past. In winter, when the ice is thick enough, you can walk across the frozen surface, go ice skating, or try your hand at curling.

How to get there

• Kitzbühel — approx. 2 km, easy route along the Brixental road towards Kirchberg in Tirol
• Also accessible by train — a stop on the Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn line right by the lake
