Rumanowy Staw is the kind of place that rewards only those willing to go the extra mile — literally. Tucked away at 2090 m above sea level in the Rumanová Valley, a side branch of the Zlomisková Valley in the Slovak High Tatras, this mountain tarn offers raw, untouched alpine scenery far from the tourist crowds.
Measuring 70 × 48 m and covering 0.248 ha, it is the largest lake in the Rumanová Valley — and by far the most impressive. The surrounding rocky terrain gives the place a dramatic, almost otherworldly character. In spring, snowfields reflect in the still water; in summer, the warm-coloured granite walls frame a picture of pure alpine wilderness; in autumn, early morning light turns the whole scene golden. The silence here is something you will carry with you long after leaving.
How to get thereThe lake and the valley take their name from Ján Ruman Driečny the Younger, a celebrated Tatra mountain guide whose legacy lives on in this wild and untouched corner of the High Tatras.
