Perched on the karst plateau of Vyšné Sokoly at 1,160 metres above sea level, the upper reservoir of the Čierny Váh pumped-storage power plant is one of the most striking and unusual sights in the Liptov region of Slovakia. Combine engineering on a grand scale with sweeping mountain scenery and you get a destination that surprises and impresses in equal measure.

The open plateau setting gives the reservoir a remote, almost otherworldly feel. Wide skies, unobstructed views towards the Low Tatras and the Liptov basin far below, and the quiet shimmer of the water make this a memorable spot in any season. In winter the plateau is blanketed in snow, while summer brings long golden evenings with crisp mountain air — perfect for anyone who enjoys wide open spaces without crowded trails.

• Starting from the Liptovský Mikuláš area / lower Čierny Váh reservoir — follow trails leading up to the Vyšné Sokoly plateau; the ascent covers approximately 430 m of elevation gain and is considered moderate to demanding.

• The reservoir is part of an active industrial facility — respect all fencing, barriers and warning signs around the power plant infrastructure.
• Direct access to the reservoir shore may be restricted for safety reasons.
• Best visited in summer and early autumn when mountain access routes are fully open.

Fun fact: with an installed capacity of 735 MW, the Čierny Váh pumped-storage plant is the most powerful hydroelectric power station in Slovakia — water is lifted nearly 430 vertical metres between the two reservoirs to help balance the national electricity grid.
