Palatinus Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Hungary - a former sand quarry that has transformed into a charming lake with a beach and a diving base. It lies within the administrative area of Esztergom, close to the town of Dorog, in the Dorog Basin, drawing both holidaymakers and anglers.

The elongated lake, roughly 840×350 metres, has an almost rectangular shape ending in a narrow bay at its southeastern tip. Fed exclusively by groundwater, it has retained remarkable clarity. The northern shore hosts the beach area with boat and pedal boat rental and a water slide, while the southern shore is lined with fishing cabins. Surrounded by patches of forest, the setting feels wonderfully wild, especially in summer when the water warms to an average of 19°C.

How to get there

• Esztergom or Dorog — short drive or bike ride along local roads, easy access
• Access from Esztergom-Kertváros — flat terrain, also reachable on foot

Practical information

• The bathing area operates seasonally, managed by Esztergom's Szent István Strandfürdő
• Fishing is only permitted from designated jetties at the fishing cabins
• A nature trail on site presents the lake's local flora and fauna
• An underwater diving museum and a sunken 17th-century ship, preserved for study, rest on the lakebed

Fun fact: the lake owes its name to bathers from Budapest who felt its water was just as good as that of the capital's famous Palatinus baths.
