The Bílichov Valley National Natural Monument is a small but botanically remarkable reserve in Central Bohemia, protecting one of the last strongholds of the critically endangered black false hellebore (Veratrum nigrum). It's a peaceful spot for nature lovers who enjoy quiet forest walks away from crowded trails.

Also known as Gothard Valley, this wooded ravine stretches from the village of Bor down to Bílichov and Hořešovice, where it merges with the Slaný Plateau. The forest here is a mix of hornbeam and beech, with lime, maple and ash trees, occasionally closing into dense spruce stands. The Zlonice Brook flows through the valley alongside a forest road and three fishponds. Spring and early summer bring the flowering of the protected hellebore and orchids, while autumn colours the mixed woodland beautifully.

How to get there

• From Bor or Bílichov - along the forest road following Zlonice Brook, about 1-2 hours, easy difficulty
• Also accessible from Hořešovice via the Slaný Plateau

Practical information

• Leaving the marked paths and damaging plants is prohibited
• Regular thinning of trees is carried out to protect the light-demanding hellebore population
• The site forms part of the Natura 2000 network

The reserve's protection dates back to 1929, when it was privately safeguarded by Count Oldřich Ferdinand Kinský, making it one of the longest continuously protected sites in the region.
