Lake Bucura is the largest glacial lake in Romania and an absolute highlight of the Retezat National Park. Sitting at 2,040 m above sea level, cradled in a dramatic glacial cirque beneath the peak of Peleaga, it offers a raw and stunning mountain experience that stays with you long after you leave. The lake stretches 550 m from north to south, covers nearly 9 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 15.5 m. Fed by five main springs, its crystal-clear water flows out toward the neighbouring Lake Lia. The surrounding landscape is boldly alpine — bare ridges, open meadows and ever-changing light dancing on the water. In summer the lake buzzes quietly with hikers and the air is fresh and sharp; in autumn the golden grasses and silence make it feel like the end of the world in the best possible way.

• From the Hațeg–Caransebeș road (km 61, Cârnești) via Clopotiva, Grebla, Gura Zlata and Gura Apei — approx. 35 km of paved road, then 14 km along a forest track to Drăcșanu, continuing via the Fetele Voilesei waterfall, along the Lăpușnicul Mare valley, past Lake Lia to Bucura — demanding, long day hike
