The Retezat Mountains are Romania's wild heart — a compact but breathtaking massif in the Southern Carpathians where glacial lakes glitter between rocky ridges and the air smells of pine and freedom. If you want true mountain wilderness without the crowds, this is your place.

The range splits into two distinct zones: the crystalline-rock Retezat Mare to the north, with its dramatic high-alpine scenery, and the limestone-rich Retezat Mic to the south, where the terrain opens up into broader valleys and karst formations. Between them lies one of Romania's most rewarding landscapes — over 80 glacial lakes scattered across cirques and plateaus, meadows packed with endemic wildflowers, and ridgelines offering sweeping views across the entire Southern Carpathian arc. The whole area is protected as a national park and biosphere reserve, keeping it gloriously untamed.

Highlights:

• Peleaga (2509 m) — the highest peak in the massif, reachable via a scenic route through Poiana Pelegii and Lake Bucura
• Păpușa (2508 m) — standing just one metre shorter than Peleaga, offering equally stunning panoramas
• Lake Bucura — the largest glacial lake in Romania, a stunning turquoise jewel best admired from the summit of Peleaga
• Lake Zănoaga — one of the deepest mountain lakes in Romania, dramatic and surrounded by steep rock walls

Practical info:

• Best season: July–September — snow lingers on the ridges well into June, but summer brings clear skies and blooming alpine meadows
• Base towns: Petroșani, Hațeg, or stay directly at one of the mountain huts like Pietrele or Buta
• Trail difficulty: moderate to demanding — routes to the main summits are long and rocky but non-technical
• Getting there: by car from Deva or Petroșani; bus to Hațeg then local transport; dirt roads lead to the main huts

The Retezat is home to over 1,190 plant species — including dozens of Carpathian endemics — as well as bears, wolves and lynx roaming freely through its ancient forests.
