Sarmizegetusa Regia is one of Romania's most awe-inspiring ancient sites — the former capital and sacred heart of the Dacian kingdom, perched at 1,200 metres in the Orăștie Mountains. Walking through its forest-shrouded ruins, you get an almost tangible sense of the civilization that thrived here more than two thousand years ago.

The site is wrapped in dense forest, which gives the ancient terraces, massive stone walls, and circular sanctuaries an almost magical atmosphere. The so-called murus dacicus — walls built from huge stone blocks — still stand in remarkable condition, and the large circular sanctuary bears a striking resemblance to Stonehenge. Spring and summer bring lush greenery and birdsong; autumn turns the hillsides blazing gold; winter makes the ruins feel austere and timeless. Whatever the season, the atmosphere here is genuinely unlike anywhere else.

• Village of Grădiștea de Munte (parking at the trailhead) — marked forest trail heading uphill, approx. 1.5–2 hours, moderate difficulty — well-signed but steep in places.

• UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as part of the 'Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains'.
• The site is under 24/7 surveillance due to past vandalism and archaeological poaching.
• Wear sturdy hiking boots — the trail can be muddy after rain.
• No shops or restaurants on site — bring your own food and water.
• Do not confuse with Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the Roman provincial capital located about 40 km away.

Among the remarkable finds unearthed here was a complete ancient medical kit — scalpel, tweezers, and pharmaceutical pots — a reminder that the Dacians were far more sophisticated than they are often given credit for.
