The Ice Lake Basin — known locally as Kotlina Ľadového plesa — is one of the High Tatras' most atmospheric hidden corners. Cradled in the upper part of the Zlomísk area, above the lake threshold of the Mengusovce Ice Lake, it is a place where summer arrives late and winter never quite lets go. If you are looking for raw, unspoiled mountain scenery, this is it.
The basin is enclosed by the southwestern ridge running from Západný Železný štít towards Končistá, keeping it in deep shadow for much of the day. The Mengusovce Ice Lake sitting at its heart is famously cold and often remains covered in ice well into summer — the very reason the basin carries its evocative name. The terrain is rocky and demanding, the atmosphere is austere and quietly magnificent. Neighbouring the basin are Rumanová valley to the north, the Basin below Dragon's Saddle to the west, and the Iron Basin to the northwest, forming a spectacular network of high-alpine hollows.
How to get thereThe name says it all: this basin was named after its lake, which lingers under ice longer than almost anywhere else in the Tatras — a remarkable natural phenomenon that reminds every visitor just how high and wild these mountains truly are.
