The Gimmlitz Valley is a scenic river valley in Saxony, stretching west, southwest, south and southeast of the small town of Frauenstein. This quiet corner of the Ore Mountains follows the course of the Gimmlitz stream through forested hills, forming a nature reserve of almost 258 hectares since 2015.

The valley's landscape is a mix of woodland, meadows and flowing water, perfect for travelers seeking a peaceful walk through nature rather than a strenuous climb. In spring and summer the valley turns lush green, while autumn paints the surrounding Ore Mountain forests in warm colors. Nearby lies the Lichtenberg Reservoir, adding to the scenic charm of the area. The valley remains relatively quiet, making it a good choice for those wanting a break from crowded trails.

How to get there

• Frauenstein — the B 171 road cuts through the valley, accessible by car with walking trails into the valley, easy difficulty
• Hermsdorf/Erzgeb. — approach from the southwest towards the historic Gimmlitzwiesen meadows, easy to moderate difficulty

Good to know

• Protected as a nature reserve since 2015 (reserve no. C 102)
• A small part of the valley, the Gimmlitzwiesen meadows, has been protected since as early as 1974
• Roads S 208 and S 184 border the area, while the B 171 crosses right through it
• To the south, the valley extends all the way to the border with the Czech Republic

Interestingly, a small 1.58-hectare portion of the valley — the Gimmlitzwiesen meadows — was already protected back in East German times, more than 40 years before the larger reserve was established.
